Run focus sessions

Dongu's focus timer runs pomodoro-style sessions with configurable focus and break lengths. Completed sessions are logged and earn 15 XP.

A focus session is a timed block of concentrated work followed by a break — the pomodoro pattern. Dongu's focus timer runs these blocks for you, logs each session you complete, and pays XP for it. It is part of the wider focus feature.

How a session works

Start the timer and work until it ends. The timer alternates between a focus phase for work and a break phase for rest. When you complete a focus session, Dongu logs it: the session joins your history and its minutes count toward your focus totals.

Set your own durations

Focus and break lengths are configurable in Settings. There is no single correct length — pick a focus duration you can genuinely sustain and a break long enough to actually rest. If long blocks keep failing, shorten them and build up; a completed short session beats an abandoned long one.

You can link a focus session to a task. The link makes the session concrete: this block of time belongs to that piece of work. Deciding the task up front is also the best defense against drifting between tasks mid-session. If a task feels too vague to focus on, that is useful information — break it into subtasks first.

XP and where the minutes go

Every completed focus session earns 15 XP and counts toward your streak. Focus XP has a daily fairness cap, like all XP — see how XP, levels and streaks work.

Your focus minutes are also visible socially. They appear next to your name on the friends leaderboard, and they power the weekly and monthly rankings in focus rooms.

Tips that make sessions stick

  • One task per session. Link it, and ignore everything else until the timer ends.
  • Take the break. The break is part of the method, not a reward to skip. Stand up and look away from the screen.
  • Size sessions honestly. Adjust the durations in Settings to match your real attention span, not an ideal one.
  • Restart without guilt. Only completed sessions are logged, so an abandoned session costs nothing. Start another.

A focus session is deliberately simple: one timer, one task, one break. The structure does the work — your job is only to start it.
